Having high-quality fits is easier than you may think.
These days I see so many men out there doing just too much. You don’t need $600 sneakers or that Gucci jacket to look good — trust me. Simple is better.
Always remember minimalism is key, and sometimes less is more.
At the end of the day, you just need the essentials.
A couple of jackets, jeans, sweaters, shirts, and shoes in the right colors, and you’ll have over a hundred different outfit combinations.
Now, let's get into how you can pull it all off.
Keep the Colors Neutral
Possibly the most important factor when choosing the right clothes for your minimalist’s wardrobe is the color.
It’s crucial that you choose a color that’s going to go with most of your pieces. If you get clothes with vibrant colors, it might look great, but you’re limiting your options.
Colors: You can almost never go wrong with black. It pretty much goes with everything, and this color is a staple in my wardrobe.
This method goes towards a few other colors. Gray, tan, white, and army green.
Choose Minimal Designs
Let's agree to avoid loud and obnoxious logos/designs. Anything more than a small and simplistic logo is overkill and just looks clustered. I personally prefer zero logo branding on my clothes.
However, there are times to have something not so minimal. This is called a statement piece. Just make sure the rest of your outfit is minimal enough to suit the loud logo design.
For minimally designed shirts try Urban Outfitters
Don’t Forget the Shoes
Here we are. Shoes. The bread and butter of any outfit. As a sneaker head myself I love anything footwear. But let's stick with the staples shall we? A solid white or black pair of sneakers is a must. Whether they are for the gym or casual wear, you can't go wrong with one of these color ways. My favorites are Nike Airmax Flyknit Utility or Adidas Ultra Boosts.
Now onto boots, my favorite. An all black pair of leather lace up boots are a necessity. I wear mine daily, and they go with any casual outfit. If you want to splurge for a second pair get a pair of camel colored chelsea boots, these are just as versatile, but a bit more classy. Both boots I purchased from Frye
Jeans Will Make It or Break It
Investing in a solid pair of jeans will be the best thing you can do when it comes to a minimalist wardrobe. Having one more expensive pair is infinitely better than having several cheap pairs, trust me. Go with black here, it's both versatile and slimming. I personally love jeans from AG and Kollar.
Choosing the Right Kind of Shirts
Sweaters and tees, let's get to it. Having a couple solid options of each is crucial. Again, less is more. Choose the pricier option over the cheap ones. The higher end tee or sweater will wear better, last longer, and fit more accurately because of the overall materials used.
A $30-$50 shirt simply cannot be compared to a $6 shirt. I know, I know, $30 may seem outlandish to some to spend on just a shirt! But even stores like Urban Outfitters have tees from $12-$18. Generally, these end up being my favorites instead of their pricier counterparts. Shop around for what best fits your budget and your style.
Top It Off with a Jacket
A good jacket is a key element for your (fall) wardrobe. The two must haves are a jean jacket and a bomber jacket. That's it. Simple. For both jackets don't go with one that has too many rips/tears or blasted with logos and designs. Remember minimalism is key, right?
Try Nordstrom's for both of these looks, they have a wide array of designs and prices to fit any budget.
